The Statistics that Define Today’s Safety Standards
Every number listed is a life: a friend, parent, sibling, child, or could be you.
Did you Know?
-
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported 549 HMI-specific Fatalities in Construction between 2017-2023.
-
Outside of jobsite reviews/audits, active housekeeping, and education of task at hand: fatalities from slips, trips, falls, and exposure to chemicals are greatly reduced with proper use of PPE. Thus, we consider having direct control over them.
Between 2017 and 2023, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that of the 918 fatalities that had no-direct control: 833 were caused from HMI-Related incidents.
-
In Canada, there were 6.9 fatalities per 100,000 licensed drivers in 2022. Compare this to the 9.6 fatalities per 100,000 as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2022. We all know that driving is dangerous, but constriction is nearly 1.5 times as dangerous.

It’s natural to think that “it won’t happen to me,” but the reality is that survivors of any safety incident says the same thing: “I always knew of the danger, but I never thought it would happen to me.”
Have you ever injured yourself and thought “well I was being stupid” or “it was a freak one-off accident” or “I have done this 1000 times, I can’t believe this happened”. Every day we are faced with risk of fatality. Without proper mitigation or removal of the risk, the statistics show that the risks eventually catch up to our luck.
Contact Incidents (HMI-Related) have not been “Steadily Declining” over the years
